SELVEDGE TALKS TO SULA
With the Selvedge Fair in Charleston opening its doors to visitors in just over a week's time, we caught-up with Alison Taylor, the founder of Sula Clothing, who will be exhibiting her carefully curated clothes on the day...
What made you start working with textiles?
I was taught to sew by my mother when I was very young. But I mostly started because as a child, I only got the unfashionable hand-me-downs from my older sister. Because of this I decided to make my own clothes.
What about your craft captured your attention?
That I could do it!
What inspires you?
Resourcefulness.
Who’s an influence on your work?
Molly Goddard.
What’s your favourite part of the creative process?
Choosing the colours Sula will use at the start of each season.
What’s the hardest part?
The supply chain is very long and sometimes things are simply out of my hands — and things sometimes do go wrong.
Where do you live and why?
West Sussex, because I love Selvedge and Charleston.
What’s your ideal Sunday?
Going for a walk, enjoying a warm fire, seeing friends.
If you could fly anywhere in the world tomorrow where would you
go and why?
I would stay at home. I travel so much it’s actually nice not to go anywhere… Having said that, I would like to go to Iran.
What’s your favourite colour?
Pink.
What are you reading at the moment?
Nothing. I am too overwhelmed with shows!
