Space Crafted
What with Tim Peake, the New Year and the astrological thread we discovered whilst putting together our South American issue Carnival, we were initially drawn to Jan Kath's 'Spacecrafted' collection.
However, we soon realised that the German rug maker has produced a number of rather beautiful rug collections. Each design references traditional carpet design whilst also letting Kath's contemporary designs take centre stage.
Generally each collection is inspired by Kath's travels but his influences range from his local Bochum and Russian folk design to the cosmos.
Every carpet is designed by Kath in Germany and then woven by weavers in Kathmandu. The main wool used is from the Tibetan Highlands – one of the highest quality and most robust.
In addition to the wool, Chinese silk and yarn made from nettle fibres are used to reflect light and give the carpets a particular look and feel. Natural materials combined with handmade production techniques give each carpet its own character.
