We're delighted that Mexican studio Mestiz will be taking over the Selvedge Instagram today for our regular Takeover Tuesday feature. Read on for an introduction to the team and look out on Instagram for stories and insight into their work.
Since its origin, crafts and design have been part of the fabric of Mexico. We’re a country full of traditions, colors, customs and aromas — an exquisite cocktail of feelings and emotions. In praise of the biodiversity of Mexico, we decided to create unique rugs that express the richness & variety of the Mexican landscape and symbolic elements from our history. Textile Fauna pieces are handmade in Saltillo, Coahuila by Hermanos Tamayo. Saltillo is my home city, located in north Mexico, which has had a rich historic textile tradition since the 17th Century. We want to create a fantastic textile bestiary with only unique handmade textiles. Each of our rugs has a specific color, texture, and pattern, starting from the concept and brought to life on the treadle loom.
Textile Fauna suggests a new type of rug arrangement, freeing the forms, and letting them go in different directions but at the same time working as a whole. With our rugs, we seek new possibilities for textiles and traditional techniques in Mexico; textiles made by a new generation of craftspeople who are exploring new possibilities in form, texture and color, and most importantly, who have a desire to continue the evolution of textile craftsmanship.
