Year after year the public flock to the National Portrait Gallery as it opens its doors to the BP Portrait Awards. Now in its 36th year (and sponsored by BP for twenty-six) it has become the most prestigious portrait award in the world. This year alone they received 2,748 entries by artists from 92 countries around the world. With around 300,000 members of the public visiting the exhibition and a first prize of £30,000, the annual event selects only the best, often sparking brilliant careers for them. The artists selected come from a broad range of artistic backgrounds. And while many are already well established some of the most exciting work comes from young emerging talent.
