The future of the Mary Jane?
A pair of shoes with teeth? You may think the idea laughable. But believe it or not, artists Marianna Fantich and Dominic Young have designed just that - a pair of Mary Jane or Oxford lace-up shoes with the soles indented with white dentures with the occasional gold tooth. And don’t worry - the artists have stressed that the teeth aren’t real.
They are named the “Apex Predator Shoes” and are described by their creators as “predators with no predators of their own, residing at the top of their food chain” A slightly intimidating description, until you realize that their shoes are inspired by Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.
There’s even an Apex Predator suit to go with the shoes made from hair extensions, glass eyes and dentures. Together, they address “parallels between social evolution and evolution in the natural world: Nature as model, or nature as threat.”
The husband and wife duo don’t recommend wearing them but if you want a pair to terrify anyone who opens your shoe cupboard, you’ll have to wait a bit as they are currently not for sale. However fantich&young are working on a consumer version that would cost £1500.
