Thread 2019
Jessica Smith is an illustrator from Oxford and recent graduate from Falmouth School of Art. Her colourful and quirky designs caught the eye of the organisers of thread...a festival of textiles 2019 at Farnham Maltings, who commissioned Jessica to create some artwork for the festival, which takes place on the 8 June 2019.
Jessica Edney spoke to Jessica Smith about her work and the upcoming festival:
How did you come up with the Thread event design?
I knew I wanted it to be bold and colourful and to have a sense of playfulness about it. I love working with pattern and fun shapes so once I got the basic composition I just started working with colour and shape and it came together!
Have you always wanted to be an illustrator?
I’ve always known that a creative job would be for me, but it wasn't until I studied my art foundation that I realised that I wanted to be an illustrator. I loved the freedom of it and being able to put your own little mark on your work and develop a really unique style.
What are your favourite things to draw?
My favourite things to draw are plants and people, and if you’re familiar with my work you’ll notice that these two things appear in pretty much everything I do!
thread...a festival of textiles will feature a marketplace of quality exhibitors selling supplies for textile projects, artists and makers selling handcrafted work, a programme of talks, participatory sessions, demonstrations and bookable workshops.
Saturday 8 June 2019, 9am - 5pm. Bridge Square, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 7QR, United Kingdom
