Turquoise Mountain Trust has recently announced its new range of heritage-inspired interiors developed from a unique range of fabrics developed with artisans and weavers in Myanmar. Alongside, Turquoise Mountain is presenting hand-knotted rugs from weavers in Afghanistan and wallpapers from the UK that draw on the visual heritage of Myanmar.

Myanmar has an extraordinarily rich and diverse textile heritage, from backstrap to frame loom weaving. Many of the more than 135 ethnic groups have their own textile tradition. The backstrap woven patterns of Chin State tell mythical stories passed across generations. Whilst frame loom fabrics originate from the culturally rich and diverse Kachin region, the northernmost area of Myanmar bordering India to the west and China to the north and east. Kachin weaves are typically brightly coloured with extraordinary and complex abstract patterns. These fabrics, and the wider collection, will be available from the end of September and can be purchased from artisans through Turquoise Mountain.

For the past few years, the Turquoise Mountain team in Yangon has been working closely with LABEL STEP in order to support the growth of the artisan textile sector in Myanmar. Through a programme of research and community consultations, LABEL STEP and Turquoise Mountain have developed a set of fair trade and environmental standards to help improve the working conditions of weavers, and bolster the economic growth of this sector within an international market.
