WE LOVE WOOL – SELVEDGE SYMPOSIUM
It's nearly Wool Week again and this year we're celebrating this brilliant fibre with our very own, day-long, symposium. From hearing about inspiring wool-based projects to learning how to hand spin with fleece from different breeds of sheep with a drop spindle, we're covering wool from every angle.
The first speaker of the day will be the Dutch artist Christien Meindertsma. Christien, who explores the use of raw materials in her work, will be talking to us about her 'One Sheep Cardigan' project.
"We are currently working on a new collection of knitted sweaters that are each made from the wool of one merino sheep." The 'One Sheep Cardigan' project is a collection of sweaters knitted from the wool of a flock of Merino sheep from the dutch village Aarle Rixtel.
"There is only one flock of merino sheep in the Netherlands, owned by Mathee Kamp. The sheep have been shorn and the wool is on the way to be washed and spun." Each garment will come with its own 'sheep passport' documenting the individual sheep from whom the sweater's wool came from.
Christien will also cover other projects she's done around wool, but you'll have to be there to find out more, as she assures us that her new project for the Design Museum in London is, "still a surprise".
Other speakers, tutors and demonstrators will includeAdam Atkinson, Founder of British company Cherchbi, Brigitta Varadi, a Hungarian artist working with wool, Angela Colbridge of the Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers and Bridgette Kelly from the British Wool Marketing Board.
Join us to celebrate wool from all over the world at the Artworkers' Guild in London.
