Winter of Making

Facing the prospect of a winter with restricted ‘real-world’ socialising, we are putting together a six month virtual programme celebrating the comfort of making. Selvedge’s Winter of Making can be enjoyed from home and includes online workshops, talks and craft projects from some of our favourite textile artists. Whether you are new to a craft or want to learn new techniques to develop your skills, we are hoping to be able to offer something for everyone. There will be a range of taught workshops with experienced makers and designers, downloadable craft projects, project kits available to buy from our online shop, talks on a range of textile subjects and interviews with makers, as well as our podcast with a new episode added every month. There will also be an opportunity to share your craft projects on our Chat Room – sharing ideas, feedback and inspiration to keep creativity and resilience strong through the long winter months.

Launched as the clocks went back here in the UK, we have released our first workshops. Workshops form a huge part of the Selvedge community. Time and again we hear how people have left a workshop feeling not only inspired but having made new friendships with other participants. Workshops will include hand-stitched clothing with Gabriela Martinez, Swedish Påsöm Embroidery with Anna-Karin Jobs Arnberg and Bandhani tie-dye with Abduljabbar Khatri, and much more - new workshops will be added over the coming months.

In the meantime, we have a library of free craft projects available online. The projects have all been featured in the magazine and there are many crafts to explore, from making your own block printed table cloth with Molly Mahon to visible mending with Hikaru Noguchi and learning to sew a dress with Merchant & Mills. There is also the Selvedge podcast to listen to, hosted by Selvedge founder Polly Leonard. Polly has been making, thinking and writing about textiles for 40 years and knows that the more you learn, the more you learn there is to discover. Episode One: Upcycling is now available featuring three guests: fashion designers Christine Mayer and Elina Tseliagkou and rug weaving co-operative Multicolores. New episodes will be added monthly.
