With every new year comes exciting, new competitions. One competition to be sure to take note of this month is our current give away for the Mountain Rug. Generously donated by Artisan Project, the collective company was founded in 2011 by L.A.-Palestinian designer Nina Mohammad-Galbert and is currently based in Fes, Morocco. Whole-heartedly believing in the preservation of hand-woven artisanship, the company insists upon improving the lives of its fourth-generation weavers through sustainable pay and fair price points. In what they describe as a “hand-in-hand” production process, Artisan Projects also regularly crafts their fine woollen products with a variety of communities across the country. These include weavers in the ancient Fez Medina, an Ain Leuh women’s weaving cooperative in the Atlas Mountains, as well as craftswomen of the Amazigh culture.
Along with creating an impeccably-curated sourcing experience for those impassioned by the crafts of this region, the designer also lifts the veil of anonymity that regularly persists within the contemporary weaving world. By directly introducing us to the makers of her soulful products, we are also invited to further connect with the land and artisans of Morocco.
In keeping with Nina’s commitment to collaborative craft-making, this particular rug was made in partnership with female weavers and as always, out of locally-sourced hand-spooled wool. Embodying the rich textile traditions of the Amazigh people, the rug reinterprets Berber symbols that are deeply rooted in nature into a modern ode to the beauty of the land and to the hands that made it.
Undoubtedly a beautiful mindset to take into the coming new year, we have one Mountain Rug to give away—worth $1200.
Enter to win as competition closes on February 15, 2021.
