Being outside has always been a great joy for Molly Mahon, the East Sussex-based textile designer specialising in the art of hand-block printing. Whether she be in her own garden, the rolling hills of Scotland, the incredible flower fields of India, or even in the wild hedgerows of the British countryside, it is where she has always felt most inspired and at peace. Launching this February, it is precisely the joyful colours and beauty of nature’s offerings that Mahon is delighted to celebrate in Greencombe: a playful, new line of cottons and linens designed in East Sussex and hand-block printed in Rajasthan.
Combining nostalgic depictions of strawberries and tulips with reworkings of majestic Mughal flower designs, the collection’s textiles boldly play with unexpected natural elements. In Greencombe, even visions of stripes left behind by a plough can commingle with little seeds denoting hope and new beginnings. In bringing to life the wonders of Primroses, Wild carrot, and Dianthus flowers, it is above all Mahon’s intent to further highlight the awe-inspiring power of the natural world and awaken us to behold and protect it.
The colour palette incorporates some of the signature bold hues the designer is known to most often work with, alongside more earthy tones that can be found in both the Great Indian Desert and English countryside. This thoughtful selection allows for a range of options to those looking for something sophisticated with a touch of upbeat charm.
Regarding the collection’s production, Molly’s initial drawings were transported from her U.K. studio to Rajasthan last year—a region widely considered as the heart of block printing. They are now being meticulously block printed by a team of highly-skilled craftsmen onto a delightful range of products that will undoubtedly appeal to textile-enthusiasts abound.
