GUIDELINES
Selvedge Magazine provides a wide-ranging overview of the textile world. Directed towards an international audience, Selvedge covers fine textiles in every context, with features on fine art, fashion, interiors, ethnographic textiles, important collections, and textile focussed travel. The Selvedge readership is composed of all those who claim textiles to be a passion and includes artisans and professional artists, textile academics and students, collectors, fashion and interior designers, museum curators and gallery owners.
Decisions relating to commissioning are based primarily on the quality of the images submitted; no writing – however good – can justify inclusion unless accompanied by extremely high-quality images. When submitting a proposal, please send digital files (350dpi jpeg or tiff files) that illustrate the subject, along with a one-page outline and a prose synopsis of the article. We also request that you send one example of published text, so we can review your writing style.
Once your proposal has been reviewed by our editorial team, if it is of interest, we will contact you to arrange specifics such as word length, content, and a deadline.
Once an article has been commissioned:
Format
The text must be supplied as an unformatted Word document and sent as an attachment via email. The number of words should be as commissioned. Please do not exceed this number without prior agreement with the editorial team. Once commissioned, you will receive a Selvedge style guide. Please read this carefully and align your text to the Selvedge style text before submitting.
Publication-quality images, 350dpi JPEGs or TIFFs must be accompanied by a caption/ photographer credit sheet. Please share images via WeTransfer or as a Google Drive folder. The final selection of images is decided by the editorial team.
Please include details about forthcoming books or exhibitions you wish to publicise. In the case of exhibition and book reviews, Selvedge will source press images directly.
Our editing philosophy is to preserve the author's voice while monitoring clarity, grammar, and usage. We reserve the right to edit your material as necessary to fit the style and format of Selvedge Magazine. By submitting an article, you grant Selvedge the right to publish your work. All publication rights are retained by Selvedge. The author warrants that the same or similar material has not been sent to another publication.
Compensation
Selvedge pays a discretionary honorarium for commissioned text only at a rate of £10 per 100 words. Selvedge does not pay a drop fee, and acceptance of an article sent on spec does not guarantee publication. Payment will be provided upon publication only and is based on the final number of words printed.
