Saturday 17 & Saturday 24 May 2025, Stitching a Royal Indian Miniature (Costume or Chogha) with Dhruvita Paralkar
11:00 - 14:00 BST (British Summer Time, London, UK)
Online event hosted on Zoom by Dhruvita Paralkar of The Textile Revolution
For the past 8 years, Dhruvita has had the privilege of working with Geeta Khandelwal, a globally recognised quilter and textile enthusiast based in Mumbai with experience of four decades. Together, they have collaborated on projects such as Indian Miniature Costumes, Miniature Dolls Quilt and Covid-19 stitching story books. Geeta Khandelwal has been a great mentor to Dhruvita. Dhruvita's expertise lies in pattern drafting, sewing, and embroidery. In the Indian Miniature Costumes project, Dhruvita played a vital role in studying and interpreting traditional costumes, scaling them down accordingly, choosing the right fabrics, creating patterns for costumes, and sewing the final pieces together. Dhruvita will be leading the workshop and sharing her knowledge and skills on behalf of Geeta Khandelwal.
The Indian Miniature Costumes is a collection of exquisitely handcrafted costumes consisting of 60 pieces including Jama, Angarakha, Chogha and Sherwani. These pieces are inspired by the book of The Calico Museum Of Textiles in Ahmedabad. Each costume in the collection showcases a unique traditional craftsmanship featuring a diverse range of fabric such as silk brocades, hand block print, fine mal, jamdanis and many more.
The collection was first exhibited at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Mumbai in October 2019. Later in April 2023 it was showcased at the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska USA.
Upcoming Exhibition
The Knitting & Stitching Show, Alexandra Palace, London (10-13 October 2024) & Harrogate Convention Centre, London (21-24 November 2024).
