Ainu Stories: Contemporary Lives by the Saru River, until 21 April 2024, Japan House, London
On now until 21 April 2024.
Experience Ainu culture as it exists today in the southern Hokkaido region of Biratori in an exploration of the contemporary lives of this indigenous community. Historically, the Ainu could not express their culture, causing many to fear for its long-term survival. During the 1960s and 1970s, however, Kayano Shigeru, from Nibutani village in Biratori, was the first Ainu to sit in Japan’s parliament. He inspired a movement to celebrate, sustain, and develop this distinct, yet lesser known Japanese culture, including the Ainu language, textiles, crafts, and traditions. The exhibition uncovers historical links between the UK and Biratori, telling the story of 19th-century explorers whose legacies live on in the region today.
