Noel Chapman - Bleu Anglais

Noel Chapman is a textile specialist and founder of Bleu Anglais, a small UK‐based company devoted to sourcing and selling original Chinese indigo paste-resist patterned cloth.

With a background in fashion and textile design—particularly knitwear and trend forecasting—Noel has long collected rare and beautiful textiles. Over recent years he has focused increasingly on vintage indigo cloth from rural China, travelling to discover lengths and panels that were once used for children’s garments and home linens. 

Noel’s eye for the subtle beauty and cultural significance of these cloths has found an eager international audience. Many pieces in his collection date from the late 19th or early 20th century and reflect deep dyeing techniques (some dipped up to 90 times) and symbolic motif design. 

Through Bleu Anglais, Noel brings these rarely-seen textiles into contemporary dialogue – appealing to interior designers, makers and collectors alike. His work is characterised by quiet passion, craft-led curation and a commitment to preserving stories in cloth.
