This volume is the first truly comprehensive reference work to chart the history of embroidery across Scandinavia and Western Europe—from the Bronze Age right through to the contemporary moment. It brings together 76 richly illustrated chapters, spanning domestic and professional uses of embroidery, and covers materials, techniques, regional styles, design evolutions, and modern applications—illuminating how fabric and needle-work have embodied identity, politics, faith, and fashion across centuries.
With 634 illustrations (554 in full colour), the book spans garments, accessories, furnishings, and soft décor—making the image-rich spread into a treasury for craft historians, makers, curators and collectors alike.
