Fuji Maeda - Fuji Kimono
Fuji Kimono specialise in antique Japanese folk textiles, chosen for their depth of history, quiet beauty, and exceptional craftsmanship. Each piece is personally sourced during regular buying trips throughout Japan, creating a collection that is both intimate and carefully curated.
The focus is on indigo-dyed cotton (藍染), featuring traditional techniques such as kasuri (絣), sashiko (刺子), katazome (型染め), tsutsugaki (筒描き), and shibori tie-dyed (絞り), alongside rare materials including asa (hemp), cotton kaya (mosquito net textiles). Dating from the late 19th century to the 1980s, these textiles reflect the everyday lives, skills, and aesthetic sensibilities of rural Japan.
Having begun sourcing vintage kimono nearly 20 years ago after moving from Tokyo to the UK, I now work with collectors, artist, designers, and textile enthusiasts internationally, and regularly exhibit at textile fairs across the UK.
Alongside these antique pieces, Fuji Kimono collaborate with artisans in Bombay, india to create contemporary garments inspired by Japanese workwear. Using hand-selected vintage fabrics combined with Indian cotton, these pieces honour traditional techniques while giving new life to heritage textiles through slow, considered craftsmanship.
