Guni Brar - Loom & Things

Loom & Things creates contemporary clothing and accessories rooted in heritage Indian craftsmanship. With origins in rural India where their materials are hand made by skilled artisans, the brand is based in London & New Delhi.

They blend hard to find, traditional artisanal textiles, techniques and motifs into modern-day silhouettes. The brand focuses on limited, small batch creations for consumers who seek works of art and craft, not merely clothes, which tell a story instead of burning out like a trend. Each piece is uniquely conceived, designed and made slowly, with intention at their in-house studio in New Delhi.

Born out of a love for traditional craftsmanship and its preservation, mother daughter duo Guni & Anupinder Brar have created a cluster of spinners and weavers in their homeland Punjab to revive the traditional Khes weaving craft. The Khes is a type of thick, handwoven textile made using natural fibres. Often used as a blanket, bedcover, or shawl, it is known for its bold, harmonic colours and patterns. The weaving of khes is a generational craft, historically done by women, and was often associated with trousseau's for brides. The craft suffered hugely during the 19th - 20th centuries when the handicraft industry crumbled as a whole. Furthermore, factory manufactured blankets destroyed the local weaving communities. The duo is on a mission to revive the craft and the community associated with it to its former glory.

Everything from handspinning, dyeing and weaving takes place in-house on their family farm near Bathinda Punjab. The process uses traditional hand operated spinning wheels called charkhas and old wooden handlooms. The resulting material is soft, breathable and long lasting. What started with one weaver and one loom has now expanded in a fully operational weaving and training unit.
