India, Karomi Crafts & Textiles, Weaving
Founded in Kolkata in 2007 by sisters Sarita Ganeriwala and Sarika Ginodia, Karomi is a design studio rooted in Bengal’s handloom heritage yet unafraid of modern expression. What began as a small creative endeavour has evolved into a collective of over 200 artisans, united by a shared belief in slow, conscious creation.
At Karomi, design begins as a dialogue — between the designer’s vision and the artisan’s hand, between innovation and inheritance. Each piece is handwoven in Jamdani, a centuries-old weaving tradition where motifs are picked thread by thread on the loom. This intricate extra-weft technique transforms fabric into narrative, often taking months to complete.
Working primarily with handspun cotton, gicha silk, and zari, Karomi combines natural dyeing, Kantha embroidery, and block printing to build a layered, contemporary textile language. Every yarn, motif, and hue speaks of collaboration — of patience, purpose, and respect for the handmade.
Guided by sustainability and authenticity, Karomi seeks not only to preserve Bengal’s weaving legacy but to reimagine it for the present, proving that true luxury lies in time, touch, and tradition made new.
