Born in Kolkata in 2011, Maku is a textile-led clothing label founded by designer Santanu Das. From the outset, the studio has worked directly with weavers in villages across India, creating a close dialogue between designer and artisan and allowing traditional knowledge to shape each collection. Today, Maku brings these textiles to an international audience while remaining quietly rooted in the communities and craft practices from which they originate.

At the heart of Maku is a belief that clothing can be a vessel for preserving craft. Rather than following the pace of seasonal fashion, the studio embraces slow consumption and creates garments that honour the history of their fibres, the hands that make them, and the traditions they carry.

Working with hand-spun and handwoven fabrics, natural dyes, and traditional techniques, Maku places the textile itself at the centre of its design. Its Jamdani pieces are particularly expressive, revealing the patience and precision inherent in handloom weaving.
