Jess Quinton - Quinton + Chadwick

Quinton + Chadwick, designed by Jess Quinton, began from a wish to launch a knitwear brand using only small British Mills. Concerned with the effects of fast fashion on the environment, the brand is invested in the idea of communicating the true worth of traditionally crafted UK textiles.

For 25 years, Quinton + Chadwick have released small and highly coveted seasonal collections in curated colour stories. Designs are timeless, intended to be looked after and loved forever. The label are recognised for unique colour combinations and contemporary take on traditional Scottish heritage designs as well as the sustainability of their British production and the quality of their craftsmanship.

Jess Quinton trained in knitwear at The Royal College of Art, and then worked for the fashion house Missoni, colour and pattern being a big part of her DNA. Coastal Suffolk is also a big inspiration, and the backdrop of many of the brand’s campaigns. It is in Jess’ Suffolk studio that the initial sketches and mood boards are made, this is a slow and thoughtful process before she creates the colour-ways and knits the pattern swatches. Many different colour and yarn combinations are tested throughout the design stage, always referencing initial mood boards containing all tonal colour and stitch ideas. Natural mineral brights chime against rich dark base notes. Graphic patterns counterbalance calming textures and earth tones.

The wools are spun by an English family mill that has been running since 1766. This long succession has enabled valuable knowledge to be passed down through the generations to create a product of the softest and most superior quality. Working with skilled artisans and craftspeople to promote traditional techniques, preserve cultural heritage and support small-scale production practices is a founding principle of the conscious brand. The knits are only made in small quantities since the craft is labour intensive. Once the collection is finished, it is photographed in Suffolk amongst the natural landscape it was inspired by.

Quinton + Chadwick products are made from 100% wool, some from British sheep and some from Geelong in Australia, because of its superior soft handle. Wool is naturally temperature regulating, kind to the skin and breathable. Wool is organic and sustainable and the production process is zero waste ensuring minimal environmental impact. From the shearing of the sheep to the very end of a product’s lifespan, when it eventually biodegrades, returning to the earth.
