Explore the art of freehand English paper piecing (EPP) with Montreal-born textile artist Catherine-Marie Longtin. This comprehensive workshop, taking place at Ray Stitch, the contemporary fabric and haberdashery store on Essex Road, will guide you through the process of creating your own EPP artwork from start to finish.
You will learn how to draw original designs, select complementary fabrics from Ray Stitch's expertly curated collection, and master traditional hand-stitching techniques that enable you to incorporate organic shapes and movement into your work. Longtin will introduce the method through inspiring examples, discussing when freehand EPP is most effective and which shapes work best. You'll develop skills in pattern drawing, paper cutting, fabric basting, and hand stitching, concluding with appliqué techniques for finishing your piece.
Based in South East London, Longtin has spent ten years perfecting her craft, creating minimalist quilts inspired by abstract art, architecture, and interior design. Her quietly confident use of colour and innovative approach to traditional techniques transform conventional patterns, such as hexagons, into contemporary artworks with fluid, organic movement.
All materials provided, and all skill levels are welcome. You will leave with a strong foundation in freehand English paper piecing, a beautifully hand-stitched textile artwork of your own, and the confidence to continue exploring this creative and meditative technique at home.
