Abstract Textiles Workshop with Janie Murphy as part of Textile Weekender at City Lit Art School textile weekender for London Textile Month.
Explore playful and intuitive approaches to surface design in this hands-on abstract textile design workshop. Working from a curated collection of small, tactile objects and experimental drawing prompts, you’ll begin by creating hand-drawn designs using a range of drawing approaches and mark-making techniques. In the second half of the session, you’ll transform your artwork into a heat transfer printed fabric sample (A4 or A3) using transfer dyes onto fabrics. No prior experience needed.
There will be supporting materials to refer to such as examples of the techniques and processes that you will be exploring. You are welcome to take photos of the examples for your own future reference. There will be time for discussion and feedback at the end of the workshop.
This course is suitable for all levels, no prior experience needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore and engage with new ideas through drawing and print.
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to understand the basics of colour mixing with paper dyes to enable you create abstract designs for textile and surface pattern application. We hope that this workshop will encourage you to further develop the starting points formed in this workshop.
You may wish to bring 1 or 2 additional personal objects to work from for still life drawing. Consideration of these objects may include any of the following: interesting surface texture, marks, shape and/or colour. It would be useful to bring a simple portfolio/folder to carry your work home in.
Janie Murphy is a textile designer based in South London. Working from a converted 1920’s garage at the bottom of her garden, Janie works from her observational drawings to develop abstract artworks and overlays, collages alongside her textile design work.
All materials provided, and all skill levels are welcome.
