Experimental Drawing for Textiles with Jen Butterworth as part of City Lit Art School's Textile weekender, as part of London Textile Month.
This workshop introduces mark making as a creative starting point for textile design. You’ll explore a variety of experimental drawing techniques to create textures, motifs, and abstract elements that can be developed into prints or fabric-based artworks. Emphasis will be placed on process, play, and generating visual ideas through materials.
You will be taken through a series of exercises of mark-making and its role in textile design using diverse tools and materials as the starting point. From this you will create repeatable motifs through layering and variation.
By the end of this workshop, you should be able to use a range of mark-making techniques to engage your creativity. You will leave with a small body of exploratory drawings from which you can develop abstract motifs and textures suitable for future textile applications.
This course is suitable for all levels. No drawing experience is necessary—just a willingness to explore and experiment. All materials will be provided. You may wish to bring a sketchbook or envelope to store your drawings.
