Embroidery, A Pocket for your Art with Selina Latour as part of Textile Weekender at City Lit Art School textile weekender for London Textile Month.
In this workshop, participants will learn how to embroider a pocket patch which they can take away to use in whichever way they choose.
Whether you're interested in sewing pockets onto sweaters or attaching patch pockets to jeans or tote bags, our aim is to dedicate an afternoon embellishing this practical textile element that you can be added to your clothing—a subtle act of resistance which advocates for gender equality and female empowerment.
The workshop will begin with a short history on the gender history of pockets You will be shown basic hand embroidery stitches to then embroider a pocket shape of your choice using a variety of threads, scrap fabrics and templates to embellish your patch, bringing their own style and stitch techniques to the piece. You may wish to create some kind of slogan or sew lettering by upcycling fabrics or adding beads or braiding for example.

By the end of the session, you should be able to embellish a pocket patch using your choice of stitches and surface decoration. You will be able to take your piece away, with the hope to use it to patch or personalize a garment or perhaps frame it as a piece of textile art instead.
All tools and materials will be supplied. Please bring a small bag or envelope to take your embroidered piece home.
