Weaving Workshop with Renata Minoldo as part of City Lit Art School's Textile weekender, as part of London Textile Month. 

Join artist and tutor Renata Minoldo on this hands-on workshop where using botanically dyed yarns, wools and reclaimed fabric straps you will be weaving your own woven piece.

This workshop is designed to teach you the basics of weaving, with a focus on raised surface decoration and highly textured techniques, inspired by traditional rug making techniques. The course focuses on teaching you to weave using the most simple and accessible weaving equipment, a frame loom. You may apply techniques learnt to make woven cloth for interiors/upholstery, fashion or to create a contemporary woven textile art piece.

You will gain a sound working knowledge of weaving. You will learn about basic weave structure, techniques, materials, terminology, and tools and equipment. You will be guided through from the initials steps of how to set up a loom with a warp for weaving; understanding sets and tension; warp and weft. You will be taught how to handweave in plain weave structure on a frame loom. 

We will cover simple edging techniques of hemstitching and fringing and how to take the piece off the loom. You will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of yarns and fibre types to explore scale, colour and texture. By the end of the session, you should be able to dress a loom with a warp and complete a small woven piece using some of the techniques demonstrated in the workshop.

This course is aimed at beginners, and no prior weaving experience is necessary. It teaches basic skills however; it is also suitable for those who wish to revise their knowledge of woven techniques.

Tools and materials will be provided but, please bring an A4 sketch book or file so you can collect visual information, file sample swatches, record any new techniques and collect handouts. You are welcome to bring along any fancy yarns and materials you may wish to also use and experiment with. 

Renata Minoldo is an artist and educator exploring the physical and emotional body through textiles, sculpture and experiences with people. She has academic training in Textiles and Visual Arts and hands on experience in the Textile Industry working in London, New York and Buenos Aires.

She is interested in alternative ways to approaching art education, aiming to stimulate an intuitive learning and focusing on the individual processes and needs. She works with a wide variety of people, from children in galleries and primary schools to teenagers and older adults in community centres, charities and public spaces.

All materials provided, and all skill levels are welcome.
