Catherine-Marie Longtin is a Montreal-born French Canadian quilt-maker and textile artist living and working in South East London. Raised in a family of makers, she learned to sew from her mother at an early age and began experimenting with fabric through handmade household textiles and furnishings.
After completing a PhD in cognitive science and pursuing an academic career across Montreal, Paris, Lyon and Cambridge, she left academia in 2008 to return to her enduring love of textiles, colour and composition. For the past decade, she has worked full-time as a quilt maker from her studio in Camberwell, developing a distinctive visual language informed by abstract art, minimalist design, architecture and interiors. She has exhibited widely within the contemporary quilting community and prior to London Textile Month, will also be part of the Selvedge Quilt Jamboree at the Museum of the Home.
Her recent work explores the expressive possibilities of hand stitching and English paper piecing, combining traditional quilt structures with freer, more organic forms that introduce movement and rhythm into familiar geometric patterns. Through subtle colour relationships and carefully balanced compositions, her quilts function as both tactile objects and studies in abstraction, reflecting a thoughtful and deeply material-led approach to contemporary textile practice.
Event Description
Catherine-Marie Longtin presents a rare exhibition bringing together the 100 log cabin quilt blocks created for her forthcoming book, Log Cabin Quilt Blocks: 100 Colour and Pattern Variations, published by Batsford. Displayed together as a complete series, the works explore the remarkable versatility of one of quilting’s most enduring and recognisable patterns.
Through subtle shifts in colour, rhythm and geometry, each block becomes a distinct study in composition while contributing to a larger visual conversation across the exhibition. Drawing on influences from abstract art, architecture and minimalist design, Longtin transforms the traditional log cabin structure into a contemporary exploration of repetition, variation and textile abstraction.
Presented at the Batsford Gallery, this exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the complete body of work in one space before the publication of the book. Together, the blocks reveal both the technical precision and quiet creativity of quilt making, celebrating the enduring possibilities of colour, pattern and stitched form.
