Subrang Arts is a registered charity and voluntary organisation dedicated to the promotion and development of Asian art, craft and culture. Named after the Sanskrit word meaning “spectrum of colour”, the organisation celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Indian subcontinent through exhibitions, performances, talks, heritage projects and educational programmes. Through its work, Subrang Arts encourages a deeper understanding of traditional arts within contemporary multicultural Britain, while creating opportunities for cultural exchange and community participation.
A strong focus of the organisation’s work is intergenerational learning and engagement, particularly through projects that connect young people with artists, artisans and cultural practitioners. By combining education with creative participation, Subrang Arts supports the preservation of traditional craft knowledge while encouraging confidence, collaboration and cultural awareness through hands-on experiences and community-led projects.
Event Description
Produced by Subrang Arts and supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Crafts of Garba explores the rich craft traditions connected to Garba, the celebrated Gujarati folk dance and ritual recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Moving beyond dance alone, the exhibition highlights the textiles, adornments, ritual objects, clay vessels and decorative crafts that shape the visual and cultural world of Garba.
Through garments embellished with mirror work, handcrafted objects, film and research gathered in Gujarat, visitors are invited to discover the artistry and community knowledge woven into this living tradition. The exhibition also reflects a year-long programme of collaborative workshops and community engagement, exploring how these craft practices continue to evolve and remain meaningful within contemporary Britain.
