At Guildhall, we don’t just teach costume – we craft storytellers. Our students train to become the next generation of costume designers, makers, supervisors and wardrobe managers, mastering the art of bringing characters to life through fabric, form and fearless creativity.
From the shimmer of Dorothy’s ruby slippers to the stretch of Batman’s tights, costumes often become the most unforgettable part of a production. But behind the scenes, it’s a world of engineering, problem-solving and pure imagination – where vodka sprays, horsehair and even cat claws might be part of the toolkit.
Come meet the makers. Discover the magic. And see how we’re shaping the future of costume in film, TV and theatre – one stitch at a time.
Guildhall School is a vibrant, international community of musicians, actors and production artists in the heart of the City of London, delivering world-class professional training in partnership with distinguished artists, companies and ensembles. A global leader in creative and professional practice, Guildhall School promotes innovation, experiment and research, and is also one of the UK’s leading providers of lifelong learning in the performing arts.
The School’s Production Arts department has long been recognised as providing some of the most innovative vocational theatre training in the world, boasting technical and performance facilities which are among the best internationally. Students work on public productions and live events, including on work placements as part of professional companies, gaining the practical experience required for future work in the industry.
The Costume pathway of the Guildhall’s BA (Hons) in Production Arts offers students a dynamic, hands-on course that blends creativity with practical skills. Students develop a comprehensive understanding of costume for performance, covering design to realisation for stage and screen, and immerse themselves in the art and craft of costume-making, gaining expertise in construction and textile techniques.
Nikki Weston started sewing at the age of five and has been making throughout her life. Before going to university to study costume construction in 2019 she worked for the Home Office but was always teaching sewing and making for herself.
In the last four years she has worked as a dresser, wardrobe manager, costume supervisor and maker for TV, theatre and opera. Achieving a first class honours degree in 2022 has led her to working on productions at Guildhall School and teaching Costume students. In 2023, she worked for Evolution Productions on ten pantomimes, then in 2024 worked as costume supervisor for The Merry Opera's production of Handel's Messiah. She now juggles working as a lecturer with being a freelance Costume maker.
