Liz Baltesz is a maker with a longstanding fascination for colour, explored through both knitting and natural dyeing. Since the 1980s she has worked with a wide range of knitting techniques, including stranded colourwork, intarsia, mosaic, brioche and stacked stitches, developing a practice rooted in the expressive possibilities of yarn.

Her interest in plant-dyed fibres led her to study natural dyeing more deeply, and what began as curiosity soon became a central part of her creative life. Over the past fifteen years she has experimented with a wide variety of dye plants and methods, taught natural dyeing workshops for events and yarn stores across the UK, and created naturally dyed knitting kits for independent textile retailers.

Drawing inspiration from landscapes close to home as well as plants gathered on her travels, she is particularly interested in helping others build confidence with colour and discover how natural dyeing can be approached sustainably in a domestic setting.

Event Description
Liz Baltesz will lead a practical workshop inspired by the remarkable palette of the Bayeux Tapestry, inviting participants to recreate some of its historic colours using plant dyes.

Working in pairs or small groups, participants will learn how to extract colour from a selection of fresh and dried plants, along with natural dye extracts, before using these to dye embroidery wool in a range of luminous shades.

The session will introduce the foundations of natural dyeing, including mordanting, modifying colour, finishing techniques and record keeping, while also offering guidance on how these methods can be adapted for home use. By the end of the workshop, each participant will leave with a collection of hand-dyed embroidery wool skeins and a deeper understanding of the rich relationship between textiles, history and colour.

Event Cancellation Policy
All bookings are non-refundable. However, if you let us know that you are unable to attend an event you have booked at least two weeks before the event, we will open up your place. If we find another participant, you will be offered a credit note.
