Thursday 24 September, 8.30 - 11 p.m.: Screening, Queen at Sea: Q&A with Costume Designer Saffron Cullane

Ciné Lumière, 17 Queensberry Place, London SW7 2DT

Event Description

Saffron Cullane takes us behind the scenes to uncover the inspiration, design, and detail that shaped the film’s costumes in conversation with Fashion & Cinema’s Joana Granero.

Amanda and her stepfather, Martin, find themselves on opposite sides of a painful ethical dilemma. As Leslie, Amanda’s mother and Martin’s wife, slips deeper into advanced dementia, they are confronted with an impossible question: when someone can no longer make decisions for themselves, who has the right—and the responsibility—to decide what is best? A spouse? An adult child? The medical system?

As tensions rise and each choice carries greater consequences, their conflict sets off a chain of events that neither of them can control.

Costume designer Saffron Cullane will talk about her work creating the costumes for the film before the screening.

An Irish born Londoner, Saffron started her costume journey with Wimbeldon school of Art, graduating in 2007 with first class honours.

She began her career alongside some of the true titans of film on epics such as Wolfman, Elizabeth, Captain America. Covering all roles within costume enabled a broad and intimate understanding of the workings of the department. Designing shorts and theatre along the way, Saffron specialised in making for period, fantasy and action movies leading to all manner of weird and wonderful projects.

At the helm of the department for a number of years, Saffron is an artist that is passionate about stories, focusing closely on the ones that are screaming to be told. She has designed cult classics such as Censor with Prano Bailey Bond which was nominated for nine BIFA’s and premiered at Sundance, Teashop/XYZ’s Thriller, The Wasp starring Naomi Harris and Natalie Dormer premiering at Tribeca, Robert Morgan’s award-winning BFI classic Stopmotion and Flux Gourmet a Peter Strickland film for which she and Giles Deacon were nominated for a BIFA. She designed The Strays for Netflix, As well as Lance Hammer’s feature Queen at Sea released later in 2025. She has designed HETV such as Little Disasters with Paramount+ and upcoming series Criminal Record S2 for Apple.

Thinking in colour and form, she has lived and breathed clothes since before she can remember. Loving the collaborative nature of working with directors and actors alike, she describes the practice of costume design as the place where psychology meets art. Saffron’s methodology uses research to inform her design while subverting whenever possible. She is extremely hard working and endeavours to maintain a playful approach to the process, allowing creativity to thrive while having some fun along the way.
