From its North London studios, Cosprop has supplied costumes for landmark productions including Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth, and numerous Merchant Ivory films including A Room with a View, for which Bright received the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. Its vast archive includes original historic garments alongside costumes worn by actors including Meryl Streep, Ralph Fiennes and Nicole Kidman.

Today, a team of highly skilled cutters, makers, tailors, dyers and costume specialists continue Cosprop’s commitment to historically informed costume at the highest level, supplying productions across film, television, opera and theatre.

Event Description
50 Years of Men’s Wear 1785–1835 traces a remarkable period of transformation in men’s fashion, from the richly embellished elegance of the late eighteenth century to the restrained sophistication of Regency tailoring and the sharply structured silhouettes of the early nineteenth century. Led by Cosprop costumier Amy Eloise Trend, this illustrated talk explores how changing ideas of masculinity, class, politics and taste reshaped the male wardrobe during a pivotal fifty-year period.

Using garments and accessories drawn from Cosprop’s extensive costume stock, the talk will examine the evolution of coats, waistcoats, breeches, trousers, neckwear, hats and footwear, revealing the technical refinements and stylistic innovations that laid the foundations for modern menswear. From embroidered silks and elaborate tailoring to the rise of the understated dandy, visitors will gain insight into the fabrics, cuts and construction techniques that defined these iconic fashions.

Combining close looking with costume history and practical making knowledge, the event offers a rare opportunity to encounter historical menswear through the expertise of one of the world’s leading costume houses.
