Monday 7 September, 10-5 p.m.: Workshop, Design and Print a Scarf with CERES

CERES Studio was founded in 2020 by Florence Hawkins and Lara Mantell as a collaborative practice exploring the possibilities of natural colour in contemporary textile design. Based in South London, the pair combine backgrounds in printmaking, material research and textile design to create work that sits between craft, experimentation and environmental enquiry.

Their studio is rooted in a fascination with the chemistry of plant colour, using locally gathered and sustainably sourced materials to produce pigments that shift, layer and evolve in unexpected ways. Alongside developing their own collections, Florence and Lara work with clients to create ecologically printed fabrics for interiors, installations and public commissions, while also teaching their methods to a wider community of makers.

Their thoughtful approach to process and sustainability has established CERES as an influential voice in the growing field of natural dye printing, where traditional knowledge is reimagined through a distinctly contemporary lens.

Event Description
Florence and Lara will lead a hands-on workshop inviting participants to design and naturally dye-print their own scarf. Beginning with an introduction to the role of mordants and modifiers, the session will explore how natural dyes can be used to create layered, colourfast prints with depth and subtle variation.

Participants will then work with the studio’s own natural dye print pastes to develop a personal palette, translating sketches and visual references into textile designs through cut-paper stencil screen printing.

Throughout the day, the workshop will consider pattern, scale and composition, offering insight into the thoughtful processes used within the CERES studio. By the end of the session, each participant will leave with a naturally printed scarf of their own, along with a deeper understanding of plant colour and the creative potential of sustainable textile design.

All bookings are non-refundable. However, if you let us know that you are unable to attend an event you have booked at least two weeks before the event, we will open up your place. If we find another participant, you will be offered a credit note.
