Saturday 5 September, 2-4 p.m.: Workshop, Poppet-Inspired Brooch Workshop with Cris Prete at Museum of the Home
Museum of the Home, 136 Kingsland Road, London E2 8EA
The Museum of the Home is the only museum in the world dedicated to exploring the meaning and experience of home. Housed within historic almshouses in East London, the museum examines how domestic life has evolved over the past four centuries through period interiors, everyday objects and contemporary displays. Through exhibitions, collections and public programmes, the museum invites visitors to consider how homes reflect changing ideas about family, identity, work, technology and community.
Event Description
Create your own poppet-inspired brooch in this beginner-friendly textile workshop.
Taking inspiration from dolls in the Museum of the Home collection, you’ll discover how storytelling, memory, history and personal expression can be woven into small but meaningful handmade figures. Along the way, we’ll explore the fascinating traditions and symbolism behind poppets, and how these tiny creations have been used across cultures to tell stories, mark milestones and carry personal significance.
Using simple materials, slow stitching and plenty of imagination, you’ll experiment with textures, colours and embellishments in a relaxed and supportive environment. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with your own handcrafted poppet-inspired brooch to wear, gift, or treasure as a wearable piece of art.
All fabrics, embroidery threads and embellishments will be provided. You’re also warmly encouraged to bring along any special fabrics, buttons, beads or small keepsakes you’d like to incorporate, making your creation even more personal and meaningful.
Cris Prete is a Diploma student in Technical Hand Embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework. Cris has taken part in a group exhibition at the Town House Spitalfields as part of the London Design Festival and Shoreditch Design Triangle, regularly delivered Visible Mending demonstrations at Museum of the Home and a workshop for London Textile Month 2025.
As a Textile and Embroidery artist, Cris’s practice is rooted in deep appreciation for nature and traditional Japanese aesthetics. She is also passionate about sustainability, working with upcycled materials and embracing the art of visible mending.
