Tucked away in a quiet corner, Woven Studio has been home to handweaving since its founding by Laura Miles in 1997. It is a working studio where fabric is developed with intention and where traditional skills meet contemporary ideas.
The space is equipped with distinctive handlooms: three dobby looms and a wide-width production loom, used to produce complex, custom-woven textiles. Miles and her team work with an unusual mix of materials including feather yarns, paper threads and fine natural fibres. Their shelves hold an extensive archive of yarns, ready to be brought into new samples or developed into client-led designs.
At the front of the studio is a small gallery and shop showcasing the WOVEN collection, a line of handwoven garments made from organic cotton in collaboration with the WomenWeave and Karghewale collectives in India.
Miles’s practice is rooted in both craft and collaboration. She has co-founded Rare Thread Studio, worked with weaving communities in Central and Southeast Asia, and taught at the Royal College of Art. She was also instrumental in shaping the design direction of the historic Vanners silk mill in Suffolk.
On open days, visitors are invited to see the looms in use, browse the studio archive and speak with the team. It is a chance to understand how cloth is made, thread by thread, and to engage with weaving as a living process.
Whether you are a weaver, designer or simply interested in textile making, Woven Studio offers a thoughtful space to observe, learn and connect with the craft of handweaving.
