Christine Gent - MADE51
Every MADE51 piece is handmade by refugee artisans who, despite being displaced by conflict and war, carry their cultural heritage with them. By creating and selling their craft, refugees are able to sustain their families, preserve essential traditions, and share their stories with the world. Our collections bring together rich heritage crafts and fresh design, creating unique products that embody both cultural tradition and contemporary style.
MADE51 is a global initiative of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, that connects refugee artisans with international markets.
MADE51 works through a pioneering model that partners refugee artisans with local social enterprises in host countries. These enterprises provide support in design, quality, and market access – ensuring that products meet international standards while also strengthening local economies.
With a focus on sustainability, MADE51 products are crafted from locally available materials and carefully consider environmental impact. All collections are produced in close collaboration with the World Fair Trade Organization, guaranteeing ethical practices and fair wages. Today, 95% of MADE51 artisans are women, empowered through dignified livelihoods.
Through MADE51, refugees are reframed as positive contributors – fostering inclusion, preserving heritage, and offering the world meaningful, handcrafted design.
