Daniela Gallenti - Made by Afous
Made by Afous is home to beautiful, authentic textiles and artisan-made wares and accessories, including vintage Berber rugs. Each object and vintage textile featured has a story to tell — whether it is a personal connection with the artisan or the history behind the piece. The founder of Made by Afous is deeply curious and fascinated by different cultures, their crafts, and their skills, as well as by the incredible nature and inspiring people encountered during the ongoing search for wonders.
Sourcing rugs and textiles is a slow and mindful process, with each piece carefully selected for its distinctiveness, quality, and design. Choosing vintage pieces is a sustainable act — celebrating something beautiful that already exists rather than producing more. Authenticity and timeless style are central values in the work of Made by Afous. Through crossing borders and collaborating creatively with exceptional individuals, an unexpected alchemy takes shape. From these exchanges, a modern mindset emerges from deep-rooted traditions.
The name “Afous” comes from the Berber word for “hand.” Hands symbolize humanity, cooperation, and craftsmanship — core principles of the brand. Collaborations in Morocco began primarily with the Berber community, who themselves suggested the name.
The term “Berber” was originally coined by the Romans. The Berbers, or Amazigh (plural: Imazighen), are an Indigenous ethnic group native to North Africa, primarily inhabiting Algeria, northern Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, northern Niger, Tunisia, Libya, and parts of western Egypt. Their own name, Mazigh-en, translates to “Free People” or “Noble Men.”
