Maija Esko
Maija Esko is a textile artist from Finland, known for painted textiles designed for daily use. Her work ranges from tablecloths and curtains to bed covers and wall hangings — each a colourful story worked through paint and fabric, made to be used and cherished for years. Every piece is unique, its narrative built up through layers of stripes and colour.
The horizontal stripes draw on the landscapes of her local environment, while the intensity and layering of colour and organic form reflect places she has visited, experienced or imagined. Maija sees her work as a conversation with her surroundings, carried through colour and line — the freezing lake in winter, the wind at the corner of an old house, the fire crackling in the stove, the silence of the forest at night.
In a technique she has developed herself, Maija paints her textiles on a large table, often outdoors, then hangs the fabric on walls or branches to take in the horizon of the painting, waiting for the story to become visible. The result is work that is both artistic and functional — pieces of art made to be worn and used.
