Marion Elliot
Marion Elliot is an illustrator and designer working mainly in the medium of paper. She began making cut-paper collage around ten years ago, following a career in illustration and publishing that took in writing design books, art direction and styling. Collage emerged as a way of freeing up her working process and stepping back from purely commercial work.
She has long been drawn to folk art, and to shop fronts, fairgrounds, hand-painted signage, advertising imagery and typography, tattoos, workers' guild banners, mottos, religious iconography and paper ephemera. Cut paper allows her to work spontaneously and immediately, and suits her love of pattern and decoration well. Her intricate collages celebrate the process of heritage crafts such as basketmaking, quilting and Harris Tweed weaving, with tools and materials researched and reproduced in paper scraps as carefully as the people who populate the pictures. An interest in the innate humour of situations runs through much of the work.
Alongside one-off collages for exhibition, Marion works with clients including French perfumier Fragonard, Tinsmiths of Ledbury, The Shop Floor Project and Archivist Gallery, producing collections for interiors, packaging and textile design.
