India, Siju Shamji Vishram, Master design Stole
The stole is a smaller version of traditional master design shawl for which my elder brother had received a National Merit Certificate in the year 1995. This was a masterpiece that had taken many months to make. Many people appreciate this work, but it is difficult for us to recreate such a piece. So I thought of creating a stole with the same design concept. It has been made at our workshop in Bhujodi.
Made in our village on a Traditional 4 shaft Pitloom. It is a contemporary variation of our traditional designs in new materials and product form.
It is special because of the intricate extra weft design motifs used to create geometrical structure. The design originates from the traditional motifs used by the Meghwal Weavers of Kutch to make traditional blanket shawls in local sheep wool for the Rabari Community for whom we have been making shawls for more than 800 years. Later, a new design was created using these traditional motifs in different variation for creating a shawl in softer merino wool. I have now created a stole with the traditional forms creating a smaller stole version of the Masterpiece in cotton and silk.
