Online Talk with Charlotte Wainwright
Wednesday 6 May 2026, 5 - 6pm BST (British Summer Time)
Charlotte Wainwright is a creative bookbinder, marbling artist and visual content creator whose practice combines traditional craft, design and visual storytelling. She works across a wide range of projects, producing exclusive hand-marbled products for galleries and shops, branded notebooks for special events, and one-off bespoke bindings, boxes and binders. Alongside this, she undertakes the careful hand restoration of existing bindings, bringing new life to well-loved books. Her work is defined by meticulous craftsmanship, an experimental approach to surface and form and a sensitivity to the narrative held within each object. Wainwright discovered her love of bookbinding while studying for a BA in Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins in London. More than a decade later she continues to refine and expand her skills. She runs her studio in Walthamstow, East London, where she produces both commissioned and self-initiated work. A particular fascination with the mathematics and structural logic of box-making informs much of her practice, as does her enjoyment of working with unexpected covering materials such as wallpaper and distinctive fabrics, pushing traditional techniques in subtle and contemporary ways. Creating video content is an integral part of Wainwright's creative process. Through short-form videos, she documents and shares the making journey behind many of her projects, celebrating the transformation of paper, board, glue, and cloth into finely crafted objects. Wainwright has worked on projects for a range of cultural institutions and brands, including Liberty London, Tate, the Saatchi Gallery, the Wallace Collection, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the BBC.
In this online talk, Wainwright invites audiences into her studio and shares an insight into her creative practice. Wainwright will speak about the journey that led her to bookbinding, from her background in Graphic Design to establishing her own studio in East London, and reflect on what continues to draw her to this craft. She will explore the balance between structure, experimentation and storytelling that underpins her work, and discuss why working by hand remains such a rewarding and meaningful process.
The talk will feature a curated selection of ten projects spanning bespoke re-bindings, hand-marbled pieces, branded commissions and experimental work. Each project will be accompanied by short films documenting Wainwright's making process, offering audiences a close look at the materials, tools, and techniques involved. She will explain the creative decisions behind each piece, from initial concept and material choice through to problem-solving and final construction, highlighting both traditional methods and contemporary approaches.
The session will conclude with a live Q&A hosted by the workshop facilitator, giving participants the opportunity to ask questions about Wainwright's practice, processes and professional journey within craft.
Wainwright will also be running an online workshop, Bookbinding with Fabric on Saturday 4 & Sunday 5 October 2026, 2 - 5pm BST. To book your place, visit our website HERE.
