Online Talk with Kate Rickard
Wednesday 9 December 2026, 5 - 6pm GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)
Kate Rickard's love of textiles began at an early age, shaped by a childhood spent in a home steeped in craft. Surrounded by the creativity and quiet discipline of her mother—a textile designer and teacher—she grew up amongst threads, books and the familiar atmosphere of a working studio.
This early immersion led her to study textiles at Nottingham Trent University, where she specialised in surface design and embroidery. Following graduation, she moved into designing embroidery for the high street, alongside producing handmade evening bags stocked across London and Europe, including with brands such as Paul Smith and Erickson Beamon.
A later shift into commercial buying broadened her understanding of textiles within a global context. Through travel to Portugal, India and beyond, she gained insight into production techniques, material traditions and the wider structures that support the industry.
Today, her practice returns to its origins. Working primarily in freehand embroidery, Kate Rickard approaches stitch intuitively, creating textured surfaces that speak of memory, place and everyday life. For her, embroidery remains both a connection to the past and a quietly grounding creative practice in the present.
Talk Description
During this talk Kate will discuss her experience, study and career path that led her to becoming a full time embroidery artist and practitioner.
Kate will show examples of her work and explain her rational as to why simple stitching creates a calming practice with benefits well beyond a finished piece of embroidery. She will discuss her reference points and how she begins the process of designing the pieces, and why simple steps and preparation have helped her develop skills that add to her work, which are easy and enjoyable for the participants to adopt too.
With over 40 years of experience as a creator Kate has a deep passion for the benefits of the practice and how it has always been an integral part of her life, in all aspects.
