Dr. Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood is a textile and dress historian, who worked for many years as a textile archaeologist in the Middle East. She is the director of the Textile Research Centre, Leiden, the Netherlands. Gillian has published numerous books on textiles and in particular on the history of embroidery, including the Bloomsbury World Encyclopedia of Embroidery, an 8-volume series of which 4 volumes have already been published. In February 2026 the Atlas of World Embroidery (Princeton University Press) was published.
Talk Description
What is Embroidery?
In this talk, Dr. Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood explores a question that is far more open-ended than it might first appear. Most definitions centre on the familiar — needle, thread, ground cloth and decorative stitch — yet the extraordinary diversity of embroidery traditions around the world reveals just how many exceptions exist to even the most basic rules. North Africa and the Middle East alone encompass some 150 distinct styles, and that is before considering the rest of the globe.
Rather than arriving at a fixed definition, Dr. Gillian Vogelsang-Eastwood invites us to consider the many variations in technique, colour, design and use that make embroidery one of the most expansive and enduring of all textile arts.
