Hosted on Zoom by Youngmin Lee
Saturday 19 & 26 June 2027, 2-5pm BST (British Summer Time)
Youngmin Lee is a California-based textile artist who uses traditional Korean bojagi techniques to create contemporary textile art. She studied Clothing and Textiles and earned an MFA in Fashion Design. Her artistic practice explores both traditional and contemporary interpretations of bojagi while honoring its philosophy of sustainability through recycling and upcycling leftover fabrics.
Lee has actively engaged with Asian American communities through collaborative projects and workshops. She has twice received grants through the Alliance for California Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program and is the author of Bojagi: The Art of Korean Textiles. She continues to research, practice, and teach traditional Korean textile techniques, preserving and sharing this cultural heritage with future generations.
In 2017, she founded the Korea Textile Tour to introduce Korean textile traditions and culture to a broader international audience. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in the permanent collections of the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and the Mingei International Museum in San Diego.
Workshop Description
Bojagi, Korean Wrapping Cloths, are pieced together from small scraps of cloth and represent one of the most distinctive forms of Korean textile art. Bojagi taken a prominent place in the daily lives of Koreans across all social classes. They were used to wrap or carry everything from precious ritual objects to everyday clothes and common household goods, as well as to cover food. At the same time, bojagi feel strikingly contemporary: the bold compositions and colors of bojagi often remind the work of modern abstract artists. Bojagi can be explained as a true form of abstract expressionism.
Bojagi construction involves hand stitching, a process that many find deeply calming and meditative. While working on bojagi, makers wish for the happiness and well-being of the recipient, which are imbued into the finished work.
Youngmin will teach basic jogakbo construction in this workshop. Ssamsol is a special seam technique that makes a single-layered patchwork bojagi. During this class, students will use many pieces of fabrics and Ssamsol is a special seam technique that makes this jogakbo a single-layered and translucent finish.
