Photo Stories
Photography included in Selvedge must be styled, composed and considered. We are an imaged-based publication, and we pride ourselves on our creation of a beautiful magazine that delights the eye. Before submitting a photo story, please read through the following guidelines to ensure that your images belong in Selvedge.
Compositions with diagonals have a greater sense of energy.
Adjusting the depth of field can be a very useful tool. This means the item at the front of the image is in focus but the background is blurred.
Using a limited colour palette can be very helpful to a shot. If a colour looks out of place, it's always better to simplify the shot and take it out.
Where possible, use natural lighting in photography. But be aware of bright sunlight that may cause glare or overly-exposed photographs.
When styling a shot, try to keep it simple. If you shot focuses on one particular item, it's good to add a few extra objects in to give a sense of scale. These should be placed in a composed style.
Photographs of people should tell a story of what they do.
