Unbeknown to most, the Romanian blouse is truly an universal cultural icon. Worn by celebrities, part of cultural revolutions such as the hippie movement in the 60s, loved by fashion designers from around the world, and an inspiration for famous artists or movie characters, the Romanian Blouses trace their origins back to the ancient civilizations found along the Danube river thousands of years ago. They preserved a part of the language of signs and symbols specific to the mythical thinking of those times.

The marama, the Romanian traditional veil, is worn mainly in southern Romania, southern Moldavia and southern Transylvania. Marama possibly have an oriental origin and are decorated with white patterns woven onto a white background and often grouped toward the ends. In Arges, the patterns can include coloured geometric motifs. Marama is an essential part of the Romanian traditional female costume in these regions. Worn as a head garment, it sometimes gets so long as to touch the ground. The veil represents a true piece of craftsmanship, featuring silk and gold thread embroideries on see-through fabric.
