Sandra Hauraki - Heartcraft
Sandra Hauraki is a New Zealand born, Sussex based maker curator and the creative behind Heartcraft – a collection of hand crafted, beautiful, purposeful and needful things for life, home and hearth.
An affinity for the simplicity, intentionality and storytelling of Japanese cultural aesthetics, a valuing and appreciation of the natural, weathered and imperfect, along with a desire to tread more lightly - have always guided her making.
Drawing inspiration from the age old traditions of boro, sashiko, natural dye and hand book binding, her creative process is both organic and intuitive. Sourcing beautiful, vintage, remnant and artisan made natural fibre cloth, thread and paper - listening to what needs to be made - then piecing, layering and stitching together new with old, until another form, life and purpose emerges - creating ‘needful things’ for everyday use that bring joy in the doing.
Each piece is always unique, often one of a kind and/or small batch. The collection includes - cherrystone heat pillows, komebukuro and ‘origami’ knot bags, scented eye pillows, hand bound notebooks/journals, cushions/throws, oilskin sit mats/log carriers, aprons, clothing and accessories. each with its own story and made for a lifetime of love, use and reuse.
