Online event, hosted on Zoom by Nadia Albertini
Nadia Albertini is a Franco-Mexican embroidery and textile designer based in Paris. Her interest in embroidery started in Mexico City at just eight years old, when her grandmother taught her the basic stitches for the first time. Embroidery has been her language ever since…
She pursued her interest in hand stitching by studying textiles in Paris at the École Duperré Paris and got her Textiles MA from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs. Since graduating she has worked with fashion houses such as Chloé, Chanel, Balmain, Marc Jacobs, Schiaparelli, Jason Wu, Dries van Noten, Tory Burch and The Row, among others. Working closely with the creative directors, she imagines and develops embroideries for their ready-to-wear and haute couture labels. She works with artisans all over the world, from the historical embroidery houses in Paris, to the most talented artisans in Italy, India and Madagascar.
With her latest projects, the week-long haute couture embroidery learning opportunities in France and Italy, Nadia shares her passion for the history of embroidery, while enjoying fabulous surroundings and exploring the local textile arts scenes.
Nadia’s first two books on the topics of Rébé and Kitmir were published in 2021 and the latter in 2023.
Outline of the workshop
This workshop combines hand embroidery history, design and practice through Nadia Albertini’s exclusive access to the Rébé archives and their fabulous work for haute couture mastermind Christian Dior.
In 2021, Nadia published her first book ‘Rébé, haute couture embroidery’ to pay homage to the fantastic career and beautiful work of the couple formed by Andrée et René Bégué. They were behind this forgotten name of Parisian haute couture embroidery that Nadia has now put back in the spotlight.
Inspired by the original drawing of the sample (called poncif, in French) and the sample itself (both part of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs collection today), Nadia will take you on a journey to discover the beautiful dress called “Nuit de Juin”, designed by Christian Dior for his Spring Summer 1954 collection and heavily embellished by the Rébé atelier.
You will receive the floral pattern printed linen panel, designed to fit a 26cm or 10 inches hoop. We will embellish these flowers, leaves and wheat branches with thread using simple yet effective stitches like running stitch, back stitch, stem stitch and of course French knots. We will combine this with seed beads, sequins, faceted crystal beads and silver metal blade work.
Level of experience required
Some hand embroidery notions, beginner-intermediate.
A material pack will be sent to participants before the workshop containing:
