Susan Casagrande - Chanvre, Soie, et cetera
A French–American of Italian descent, Susan Casagrande raised five children in Paris before relocating to London in 2009.
Having worked variously as a baker, chef, and furniture maker, Susan eventually turned her creative energy towards her lifelong love of vintage and antique textiles. In recent years, she has devoted herself to recycling and repurposing historic fabrics into fresh objects of beauty — cushions, reticules, lampshades, baubles, and bags among them.
Her joy in discovering and working with textiles as diverse as 19th-century Ottoman tents, Japanese obi and kimono collars, Dutch tapestry fragments, Chinese sleeve bands, Indian saris, ecclesiastical garments, and even humble dishtowels inspired the creation of her small company, Chanvre, Soie, Etcetera (“Hemp, Silk, Etc.”), founded in 2023. From the modest texture of hemp to the most sumptuous silks, Susan feels free to experiment and innovate, fashioning exquisite, one-of-a-kind works for the home.
Her studio in South East London, open to visitors by appointment, is a magical den of shapes, colours, and rare objects — a place where imagination thrives and new creations continually take form.
