Switzerland, Riggisberg, Abegg-Stiftung Museum
The Abegg-Stiftung is an internationally renowned centre for the collection, conservation and study of historical textiles. Based in the foothills of the Bernese Alps near Riggisberg, it houses one of the world’s most important historic textile collections, spanning fabrics from the 4th century BC to around 1800—including Persian wall hangings, Central Asian kaftans, Chinese silk robes and European cloths and liturgical vestments. The foundation also encompasses a conservation and research studio, a specialist library and the Villa Abegg (the former home of its founders), and presents annual exhibitions that shed new light on textiles as both everyday objects and works of art.
